General Information Needed

Post by TomSlosar »

I'm a somewhat handy DIYer, but no expert at HVAC, in fact, very little experience with that. But I can do math, figure out CFMs, and make somewhat educated decisions. Having said that, I am very interested in trying to solve my home heating issue that has existed for over 10 years and I believe a dual zone heating solution will solve my problem. But due to funding, I need to do this myself. I have several questions if I may.

1) In a dual zone heat/air environment, I would have a thermostat in each of the 2 operating zones tied together via the control panel. But having only 1 furnace/air unit, what happens when 1 thermostat is set to the "COOL" setting and the other thermostat is set to the "Heat" setting? Is one of the two established as the Master?

2) Given I am not an HVAC guy, but also recognizing I have a rather simple application, would it be ridiculous for me to attempt this myself? I have read all the material and I believe I understand what is needed as it pertains to dampers and making sure the air flow does not have pressure built up. But I do lack the equipment to take air flow readings and static pressure, etc. My design would need to use powered zone dampers with mechanical dampers for the bypasses dumping into the basement rather than being fed back into the air returns. I'm not really asking for design advice here, but really only asking if you think this is something a relatively good DIYer might be able to do on his own.

Thank you.

Tom,
To answer you first question i would need more information regarding the Zone Panel.
Do you have a model number? It is usually located on the white label on the computer chip in the center of the board.
As far as whether or not you are capable of doing this yourself, we will have to see as the problem progresses.
Most zoning concepts are fairly simple to understand and with our help we should be able to set you in the right direction.

Go to EWCCONTROLS.COM>manuals. Some board to look at is the BMPlus-3000. NCM-300. The boards are the most popular. You can call the office and we will go over any question you might have.
