I have 5 zones in my ranch house. I had someone give me an estimate on installing a new geothermal heat pump. While evaluating my current system, he said I should not have 5 zones because it was over-working my system and that my duct work was not correct. I have a by-pass damper which he said was a bad idea. He said I should have only 3 zones at the most and that the by-pass damper was to correct the poor duct design. Basically, he said I should have more ducts active per zone than I currently have.
So, I was wondering if there was an easy way to open more ducts when one of the zones was activated. I was hoping to avoid any major work by activating more than one damper instead of re-doing the current duct work/dampers.
For instance, in the main living area of my house there are 2 thermostats - one in the family room and one in the living room. Say the family room thermostat is calling for cool and the living room thermostat is not. Is it possible/practical to tie the two thermostats together so that both zone dampers will open?
